Controlling Invasive Mussel Species
Zebra, Quagga and Golden Mussel Control
These invasive mussel species are spreading rapidly throughout the Western United States and are a threat to irrigation, potable water supply, and endangered salmonid species to name a few. One mussel can produce 14,000 offspring in a season. They attach to substrates critical to fish spawning; clog pipes for irrigation, cooling, and other uses; and consume algae critical to the aquatic food chain.
The Problem
The threat of these species is expanding in the Western US. While these organisms have been causing problems for decades in the Great Lakes and Mississippi Drainage Basin, Western states have largely been spared because of extensive efforts to prevent introduction. This prevention strategy is starting to crack. Last year Golden Mussels were discovered in California’s Sacramento Delta and are rapidly spreading through the state’s water conveyance systems. Pioneering colonies have been discovered in the Snake River system and threaten the Columbia.
Aquatechnex Can Guide You
Aquatechnex biologists have been at the forefront of fighting invasive aquatic species for decades. For the past three years our team has been heavily involved in the management of these mussels in the Western US. We have biological and chemical control technologies that can target them and stop the spread. We can also recover systems impacted by these invasive species.
Look to us to design control programs, obtain permits necessary to control these pests, and implement treatment programs that work.
